THEN From Derrick - Sept. 2006: Ever since I was a kid, I enjoyed making and saving money. I remember one time I drew up a loan amortization chart and posted it on my closet door so if I loaned money out, I knew how much interest to charge! I also kept cash books where I recorded every expense. To this day, I can go back and see when I received my very first paycheck and how I spent it. So…I had the makings of a financial advisor even as a youth. When I was in college I began to realize that most students didn't have a plan for how to best manage their money. As a result, I proposed the idea to the university that all students be required to take a personal finance course to give them the basics. My first job out of college was for a start-up software company. It was there that I learned the ins and outs of how a small business was run.
